You Are Chewing On Plastic Twice A Day

Nobody sets out to eat their toothbrush. But nylon is a plastic, and plastic abrades — inside your mouth, against the most absorbent tissue you own.

Particles A Year, From One Brush

That is the figure researchers associate with brushing on plastic bristles. Twice a day, every day, for as long as you have had teeth.

Compounds In A Standard Brush

BPA, phthalates, and PFAS are all documented in conventional nylon brush heads — and most brushes bond their tufts with synthetic adhesive.

Softer than my old plastic brush, not harsher

I was worried horse bristles would be rough. They are the opposite — noticeably gentler than the nylon brush I replaced, and my gums stopped feeling raw after brushing.

Eight bamboo brushes later, these are the ones

I have tried probably eight different bamboo toothbrushes in the past year. Every one either went mouldy on the handle within a fortnight or had nylon bristles, which defeats the entire point. These stay dry and they are actually natural.

My gums stopped being sore

They were constantly tender with a plastic brush and I assumed that was my technique. Turns out it was the bristles. Two weeks on these and the difference is not subtle.

Excellent, but let it dry properly

No complaints about the brush — firm enough to clean, soft on the gumline, and the sealed base does stop the wicking you get with cheap bamboo. Four stars because you do have to stand it upright; lay it flat in a wet dish and you will undo the design.

Didn't realise my old brush was plastic too

I had been buying bamboo-handled brushes for months without checking the bristles. Nylon, every one. These are the first genuinely plastic-free brushes I have owned.

Great brush, four is a lot at once

Quality is there and I will keep buying them. Only note is that a four-pack is a year of brushes for one person, so store the spares somewhere dry rather than in the bathroom.

Before You Ask

Questions, Answered Properly

Horse hair? Is that actually hygienic?

Yes — more so than nylon, in fact. Horse bristles are a natural protein fibre and are naturally antimicrobial, so they don't harbour bacteria the way a damp synthetic tuft does. The bristles are cleaned and heat-treated during manufacturing. Rinse and stand the brush upright to dry, exactly as you would with any brush.

Where does the hair come from? Is it ethical?

It is ethically sourced — collected from the mane and tail, which regrow, in the same way wool is shorn. No animal is harmed to make these brushes.

Is horse bristle too soft to actually clean?

It is the softest brush we make, and that is the point — but soft is not the same as ineffective. Dentists have been recommending soft bristles over hard ones for years, because pressure and technique do the cleaning, not bristle stiffness. If you want a firmer feel, our boar bristle version is the one to pick.

Who should choose horse over boar?

Choose horse if your gums are sensitive, if they bleed when you brush, if your gumline is receding, or if you are pregnant and finding your gums more tender than usual. Choose boar if you want the firmest natural clean available.

Won't the bamboo handle go mouldy like other bamboo brushes?

That is the single most common complaint about bamboo brushes, and it is why this one is built differently. The handle is one solid piece of bamboo sealed with a non-toxic coating on the base, so it dries quickly instead of wicking water. It also stands upright on its own, which keeps the head out of standing water.

How are the bristles attached without glue?

They are woven directly into the bamboo. Most brushes — including most “eco” bamboo ones — bond their tufts with synthetic adhesive that sits millimetres from your gums. There is no glue anywhere in this brush.

Is it really 100% biodegradable?

The handle and the bristles are, yes — bamboo and natural hair both break down. Compost the handle or use it as a plant marker. That is the whole product; there is no plastic component to separate out.

How long does one brush last, and why a 4-pack?

One to three months, the same as any brush. A 4-pack covers roughly a year for one person, or three months for a family of four, which is why it is the format we sell.

How is this different from the electric one?

Same philosophy, different job. The electric handle gives you 62,000 VPM and five modes; this is the manual, and it is softer. Plenty of people keep the electric for the morning and one of these by the sink for travel or evenings.
